Arteche and Elewit have teamed up to develop ZEPAS: an innovative and sustainable solution that supports auxiliary power for sub-stations, accelerating the energy transition and enhancing global connectivity. In this interview, Ángel Colmenarejo, commercial director at Arteche, shares more about this collaboration and its scope.

With over 75 years of experience, Arteche has become a leader in the electrical sector, spanning from generation to distribution. Specialised in electrical equipment, components, and solutions, the company is known for its innovative approach. In line with this commitment, Arteche’s partnership with Elewit focuses on accelerating innovation and developing sustainable solutions. Thanks to Arteche’s innovative vision and expertise in designing and manufacturing electrical equipment, groundbreaking products such as ZEPAS have been brought to market. In this interview,Ángel Colmenarejo, commercial director for Spain, Italy, and Portugal at Arteche, shares more about this collaboration and its scope.

What are the main solutions Arteche offers, and what advantages do they bring to the sector?

Currently, we operate in over 175 countries with commercial distribution capabilities and a team of over 2,800 people driving the three core areas of our business:

  • Measurement and monitoring: this area includes our range of transformers, both traditional and optical technology. It also covers equipment and solutions providing auxiliary power, like the ZEPAS solution we developed with Elewit.
  • Transmission and distribution grid automation: in this sector, we offer equipment and solutions focused on control and sub-station protection.
  • Grid reliability: here, we provide equipment and solutions that ensure a safe, efficient connection for both renewable energy generation and industry.

What issues do your solutions address?

Our solutions tackle critical challenges such as the stability and efficiency of electrical grids, renewable energy integration, and sub-station automation. We also provide technology essential for evolving traditional distribution grids into ‘smart grids.’

One of our standout qualities is our commitment to innovation, which allows us to offer products that adapt to the market’s ever-changing needs. Arteche combines all the advantages of a multinational—globalisation, commercial capacity, and international talent—with those of a family business, such as closeness and agility.

How does your technology support the energy transition and advance universal, inclusive connectivity?

Our company’s technology enables the integration of renewable energy sources into electrical grids, enhancing system stability and efficiency. Our products are critical to the energy transition, as we will play an indispensable role in modernising the grid for renewable integration. Additionally, our automation and control solutions allow for more efficient energy management, contributing to carbon emissions reduction.

As for universal and inclusive connectivity, our solutions are designed to be accessible and customisable to various contexts, ensuring that communities worldwide can benefit from reliable and sustainable energy. Notably, the ZEPAS solution can be used for providing electricity to rural areas currently lacking access to it.

What sets ZEPAS apart from other products powering auxiliary services for electrical sub-stations?

ZEPAS is a compact solution on a mobile platform, easily transported by lorry or ship, ensuring rapid deployment as it does not require auxiliary means for loading or unloading. This ease of transport, installation, and connection allows auxiliary services to be activated at any sub-station within just one day

Furthermore, ZEPAS stands out by powering auxiliary services with minimal cost and environmental impact. Unlike traditional products such as generator sets, ZEPAS emits no pollutants. Instead, it provides a reliable, efficient solution for sub-stations’ auxiliary power needs.

What role did Arteche play in the development of ZEPAS?

Arteche played a crucial role in ZEPAS development. We brought our expertise in electrical equipment design and manufacturing to ensure its performance and reliability.

This collaboration between Arteche and Elewit transformed an initial concept into a solution that is now available worldwide to all electric companies needing auxiliary services for their facilities and seeking a mobile, efficient, and sustainable solution.
