We’re excited to launch a new edition of our Data Challenge in collaboration with Red Eléctrica's electricity System Operation Modelling team. Our goal is to identify identify potential partners who can provide Red Eléctrica with the best electricity demand forecasting service. This time, we're bringing you a different challenge: while previous editions focused on forecasting renewable energy generation, in 2025, the spotlight is on predicting electricity demand.
Rigorous and reliable demand forecasting is essential to determining how much electricity needs to be generated to maintain a constant balance and meet consumer energy needs at any given time. Since electricity cannot be stored in large quantities, production must always match demand.
Take the first step toward becoming a Red Eléctrica provider!
Unusuals, IIC-ADIC, SteadySun and NAITEC are just some of the companies that participated in previous editions of the Data Challenge and have gone on to become Red Eléctrica providers. Will you be next?
Selected proposals will receive an official invitation from Red Eléctrica to participate in the online validation phase, which will run between September 2025 and January 2026. The results of this validation will be taken into account in Red Eléctrica’s next electricity demand forecasting tender.
Additionally, we will showcase the selected proposals on our website and social media channels. We’re also open to participating in other outreach initiatives, such as webinars, to highlight the solutions developed by the selected companies.
How does our Data Challenge work?
To become an official participant and gain access to Red Eléctrica’s dataset—which you will need to develop your final proposal—please submit your pre-registration via this form, by 2 March 2025. Registration opens on Monday, 17 February.
Registered companies will receive access to a dataset containing a time series of electricity demand across various electricity subsystems, including the Spanish Peninsula, the Canary Islands, the Balearic Islands, Ceuta, and Melilla, as well as historical data on public holidays. Participants will then use this information to train their forecasting models and generate a demand forecast for a specific period.
Once registered, participants can submit their electricity demand forecast proposals between 1 April and 31 May 2025.
